Horticulture & Landscape Development at Subedarganj Crossing and Traffic Islands, Prayagraj

1. Background and Context

In December 2023, in preparation for Maha Kumbh 2024, I was entrusted with a significant horticulture and landscape development assignment at Subedarganj Crossing and adjoining traffic islands, Prayagraj. The project was proposed by the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) with the objective of rapidly enhancing the visual appeal, ecological value, and environmental quality of a highly visible urban junction.

The site primarily consisted of barren and neglected land, exposed to heavy traffic, dust, and harsh climatic conditions. Given the importance of Maha Kumbh, the timeline was extremely tight and the expectations were high.

2. Project Scope
  • Landscape designing suitable for traffic islands and crossings
  • Selection and procurement of climate-resilient plant species
  • Logistics and material handling
  • On-ground plantation and execution
  • Ensuring quick establishment and ecological balance

The entire responsibility—from concept to execution—was handled by me.

3. Timeline and Execution Strategy

Project Start: December 2023
Total Duration: 10 days
Work Schedule: Continuous day and night operations

Despite the compressed timeline, a fully loaded truck of plants and materials was mobilized. Site preparation, plantation, and finishing activities were carried out simultaneously through systematic coordination.

4. Design Philosophy and Planting Approach

The design focused on low-maintenance, hardy plant species—both seasonal and perennial—to ensure immediate visual impact and long-term sustainability.

  • Pollution- and heat-tolerant plants
  • Species attracting insects, butterflies, and birds
  • Creation of micro-habitats instead of decorative planting
5. Transformation and Outcomes
  • Barren land transformed into a vibrant green landscape
  • Increased presence of insects, butterflies, and birds
  • Enhanced visual appeal during Maha Kumbh 2024
  • Proof that ecological landscaping is achievable under time pressure
6. Impact After One Year

One year after execution, the results remain deeply satisfying. Plants have established successfully, biodiversity has increased, and the site continues to serve both aesthetic and ecological purposes.

7. Client and Authority

Project Authority: Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA)
Project Occasion: Maha Kumbh 2024

8. Conclusion

The Subedarganj Crossing and traffic islands project demonstrates how design-led horticulture, efficient execution, and ecological intent can convert neglected urban spaces into thriving green zones—even within limited timeframes. Working day and night under tight deadlines, this project remains one of my most fulfilling professional achievements.

Project Overview

Client: Mr. Neeraj Arora
Project Type: Residential Balcony Makeover

Design Approach & Concept

The design followed a minimalism-with-purpose philosophy. Natural textures, soothing elements, and greenery were carefully combined to create a peaceful environment that feels open and spacious despite the limited area.

Key Design Elements Used
  • Swan Sculpture: Symbolizing peace and tranquility, serving as a subtle focal point.
  • Corner Fiber Fountain: Added for calming water sound while utilizing corner space.
  • Green Turf Flooring: Enhances natural feel, reduces heat, and adds softness.
  • Hanging Swing (Jhula): Provides relaxation without occupying floor space.
  • Thoughtful Layout Planning: Ensures openness and smooth movement flow.
Sustainability Considerations
  • Durable and low-maintenance materials
  • Space-efficient planning to avoid overcrowding
  • Use of natural elements for mental well-being
Outcome

The balcony was transformed into a serene, green retreat that feels larger, breathable, and inviting. The space balances beauty, comfort, and sustainability—proving that even small balconies can become functional garden havens.
